Without a doubt, I'd have fallen in love with this book as a younger child. Now, as an older teen, however, I have to admit that while Pierce's introduction to this quartet is satisfying, it isn't exceptional. Alanna is a bright and engaging heroine, well developed and courageous; someone who is easy to like and cheer for. Furthermore, the secondary characters are lively and the plot moves at a fast pace, leaving us eager for the next installment. Yes, all this is there is spades as is world-building, but ultimately this book never knocked my socks off. It remained a very entertaining Mulan-like novel and I can only hope the sequel tackles on something more for me to truly love.
